NY Times: Vancouver's Former Mayor Remains Face of the Games

Former Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan is a long time friend and collaborator. Among our many joint initiatives was the creation of the Philia Dialogue on Citizenship

Since  leaving politics Sam has continued his activism not only on disability related issues, but also on tough challenges experienced in our increasingly urban environment.  He has created Global Civic Policy Society with the twin goals of: Encouraging more knowledgeable citizen engagement and Research and reflection on local government.

Many of us remember Sam's inspirational presence at the Turino Olympics and Parlympics accepting the flag on behalf of Vancouver, Whistler, British Columbia and indeed Canada.  The linked article, Vancouver's Former Mayor Remains Face of the Games, from the January 30th edition of the New York Times and February 3rd Huffington Post, profiles this poignant moment as well as the irrepressible Sam's current activities.

Any of us who have accompanied Sam on the streets of Vancouver, at large public gatherings or having a restaurant meal have witnessed the steady stream of individuals who want to speak with him or simply to be in his presence. This is as true of people with disabilities as it is of everyone else.  Sam is a tangible manifestation of an emerging vision many of us have - to see the talents, leadership and creativity of people with disabilities and their families tackling the tough challenges faced by all of us in the 21st century.

Information about two upcoming events involving Sam, Vickie Cammack and myself can be accessed below.

On Tuesday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m at District 319 which is located at 319 Main Street. Explore will premiere its latest film Sam Sullivan: Life in a Wheel and hear from 15 leaders in the social sector in Vancouver. They will be following the format of the Speed Lunches [3 minutes max per speaker]. Members of the international media are expected to be present.

On Wednesday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m at District 319. Explore will screen the film again [17 minutes] and then members of the community of people with physical disabilities and the community of people with drug dependencies will have a discussion [perhaps debate] about a statement in the film ‘drug addiction is like a disability’.
