B.C. “Make a Will Week” Live event: Wills, Trusts, and Tax Consequences

Understanding wills, trusts, and related tax consequences when planning for a person with disability’s future can help secure your financial future or the financial future of a loved one with a disability.
Inspired by the provincial “Make a Will Week” that was started in 2021 in British Columbia, this event will feature a presentation and question-and-answer session with experienced Tax and Trust Lawyer, Mudit Jain, in partnership with Westcoast Wills & Estates. Mudit’s passion is tax law and he regularly advises clients on tax matters, estate planning and restructuring companies.
The 25-35 minute presentation will include information on the following topics:
- What is considered a legal will in B.C., and how can you or someone you care for create one?
- What are the risks of creating a will using an online make-a-will kit, especially when planning for somebody with a disability who is receiving disability benefits?
- What is the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), and how does it function as a type of trust?
- What is a Henson Trust?
- What does it mean to designate a trust as a Qualified Disability Trust (QDT)?
- Tax consequences of estate planning decisions
We will then have 25-35 minutes of a question-and-answer session to help you understand what you need to know for your situation.
