What is the DTC?
The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a federal income tax credit for people with disabilities. It can help reduce the amount of taxes you or an eligible family member owes. It is also a gateway benefit, providing access to other disability-related tax credits and benefits.
Why should I apply for the DTC right now?
Here’s why you should apply for the DTC ASAP:
- The 2024 tax season is coming up, and the DTC could reduce the amount of income tax that your or an eligible family member owe. It can take eight weeks or longer to process your DTC application, and the tax return deadline is April 30th—less than 12 weeks away. The sooner you get your application in, the better.
- The DTC is required to qualify for the upcoming CDB. To be eligible for the CDB upon its expected release in July, you must first have received approval for the DTC. Currently, there is no information on the application for the CDB or how long it will take to process. However, it is best to be prepared and apply now for the DTC because there may be an influx of applications once application information about the CDB is released.

My income is not taxable. Should I still apply for the DTC?
If you need assistance with applying for the DTC, please reach out to our Disability Planning Helpline! Read on for important things to know when applying.
Even if you do not have taxable income, the DTC can give you access to other federal programs. These programs include the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), the Canada workers benefit disability supplement, and the child disability benefit, as well as the upcoming CDB. Also, if you do not use the full credit on your taxes, you can transfer it to an eligible family member.
The DTC is retroactive for up to 10 years. You may be eligible for a refund if you qualify for the DTC and have paid taxes or had taxes deducted from your income. Although the credit itself is non-refundable, the Canada Revenue Agency may issue a refund for taxes paid or deducted in previous years once the DTC amount is retroactively applied.
You must file your taxes to receive the DTC and the upcoming CDB. By doing so, you may become eligible for tax refunds. Additionally, filing your taxes could qualify you for benefits based on the province or territory you are in.
We encourage everyone who thinks they may be eligible for the DTC to consider applying. Learn more about applying for the DTC.

Is the DTC for me?
The DTC has a broad eligibility range; there is no age limit, and your income does not affect your eligibility. You do not need a family doctor to apply for the DTC; a number of different types of medical practitioners can certify the effects of your impairment for you.
Getting approved for the DTC depends on how your impairment affects your daily life, not on your specific disability. Our advisors can help you communicate your impairment and its impact to your medical practitioner.
