Safe and Secure Indigenous

Adapting the popular disability planning guide for Indigenous communities

Safe and Secure: Seven Steps on the Path to a Good Life for People with Disabilities is an inspirational guidebook and national bestseller with over ten versions in print since 1996 and an estimated 100,000 books in circulation worldwide. In partnership with British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS), Plan Institute will publish an Indigenous version of Safe and Secure which will serve as a vital template to use when creating a plan for the future, reflecting Indigenous experiences, resources, stories and values. The frequency of disability among Aboriginal Canadians is conservatively estimated at twice that of the national rate or approximately 27.4%. The creation of this guide will assist Indigenous individuals and families, living with a disability, to create a safe and secure future and also contribute to their ability to participate more fully as active members of their community.
